Default Diamond Ultimate Umpire Equipment Bag

I bought this bag a few months ago. Anybody want to venture a guess as to where I bought it???? I got it from Ump-Attire. When I met with Jim Kirk in Charlotte we briefly discussed equipment bags because I knew I wanted to get one before I went to the International Umpires Camp.

I chose this over the Wilson bags because of what others have said about their zippers, and Jim mentioned the smaller bag is still more than enough to carry everything you need.

For years I had all my uniforms hanging on hangers from the hanger hooks in the back seat and I'm a bit ashamed to admit it but all my equipment was thrown haphazardly into the trunk.

This bag is great it has more than enough room to hold all my equipment, all of my uniforms, and both may base and plate shoes.

I keep my uniforms folded nicely in the top compartment which has to adjustable dividers giving you 3 separate compartments. The opening of the top compartment has a number of pockets. I'm able to keep all of my indicators, my plate brushes, bullet pencils, line up card holders and other misc accoutrements in place; including a sunglasses compartment.

The bottom compartment has more than enough room for my triple knee shin guards, CP, cups, caps, belts, and mask.

This bag, unlike it's bigger brother has a telescoping handle which easily pulls out to be pulled behind. The wheels work well and actually better than some of my luggage and make it easy to maneuver through busy hotel lobbies and such.

The material is heavy duty and gives me the impression this bag is going to pass the test of time.

My criticisms of the bag are minor. First, it is not that breathable so if you put your equipment/shoes away damp they will probably still be damp when you remove them next. The bag does have several grommet holes for breath-ability , but it just isn't enough. Although I don't know what more they could do to improve this and still maintain the integrity of the bag.

My only other criticism is that if you do not have shoes in the shoe compartment of the bag, it will not stand upright on the end with the wheels. This is a minor thing , but I would like to have seen it have some sort of reinforcement to stay upright. But once again this is minor as my bag will primarily stay in my trunk during the season and in my garage in the winter.

Here's the best thing of all. SWMBO likes it too. Initially she made a few snippy comments about me needing an equipment bag, the price and asked why I just couldn't use one of our pieces of luggage. But now she likes it because since we live out in the sticks I drive a gas sipping Toyota Corolla to and from work and games. Remember I live in NC and work and call my games in VA. She has her SUV and I still have my big, old, redneck, gas guzzling (10 MPG Baby!), 4 wheel drive Dodge Ram. She likes the bag when she wants to drive into town in the car she can take my stuff out all at once. And if it makes SWMBO happy everybody is happy.

I definitely recommend this bag.

Thanks, Warren. I've been waiting to decide on what bag to go with... it looks like the Diamond just got the favored status.

I have had the Wilson bag for 2 years and I haven't experienced any of the zipper problems others have described. Granted, the bag stays in the back of my car about 50% of the time, but the Wilson has seen considerable ground time too with no problems.

I have the bigger 36-inch model. It is THE piece of gear.

I umpire hardball 12 months a year, including H.S., JUCO, MSBL, scout ball, NCAA fall ball and anything I can find in Arizona during the winter slow time. Whatever gear I use is put to the maximum test. This bag is the one thing I put to the most stringent test of all.

Before and after every game, I take this bag into and out of the SUV (Standard Umpire Vehicle). At the office, I take it up and down stairs by the handle. I've traveled on planes with it, and I've even let my son the college player take it on a road trip (the ultimate durability test for anything is to let The Beast put it to use).

I can honestly say that the zippers, the rivets holding on the handle, the wheels, the stitching at all the stress points, and every other part of the bag that could show wear or disrepair after such a stiff two-year test are all performing beautifully!

This bag finishes first when compared to the Wilson, Jim Evans and Reebok (a hybrid player/official bag). I have buddies with the Wilson and Jim Evans bags and I also have the Reebok for my back-up gear. I assure you, the Diamond's the best.

But the best thing about this type of two-decker umpire's bag is that you can have everything you need to umpire a series of games in one bag! Once you have that bag in your vehicle, you are set! It's a wonderfully secure feeling, and worth every extra penny you'll spend on a system like this or the Wilson. I carry my uniforms on hangers, but they can fold up in there like Warren said, if you choose.

If you're a Wilson guy---which I am (Titanium, Gold CP, Gold shins)---you should ditch the brand loyalty when choosing your bag. The Wilson matches, and it looks better, but the Diamond is better.

Having talked SWMBO into allowing me to purchase a new bag in the spring of 08. I gladly forked over the bucks and bought the 36" model. One of the best purchases I have made for umpiring. The only issue I have had was one of the screws that hold the wheels on came out, quick trip to the hardware store and problem fixed.

Why don't more SWMBOs understand that they set the tone?

Seriously right? I feel a slight terror even telling mine that I need to buy something else.

Yeh. Before the season my wife asked me how much I needed to spend on umpire stuff this year.

I guessed around $150 for all the stuff. Well, after all is said and done I am almost at $300 for everything, including dues, and I still would like to get two Smitty long sleeve shirts that I will have to wait for the first check to get.

Next year is going to be just as fun with dues for another association, new polywool plate and base pants and I am just about convinced I will be getting the cutoff honigs jackets (saw them this year during the HS clinic... they do look sharp in person).

I have a PayPal account and a Visa check card that SWMBO doesn't know about. That is what I use for most gear and uniform purchases. I generally have the stuff shipped to the office, which allows me to accumulate the gear and uniforms in a peaceful, joyous, worry-free atmosphere. For the few purchases that can show up in the records without too much spousal input (nagging), I use the joint account.

This system has been quite successful.
